The Ethics and Public Policy Center is delighted to announce that Dr. Bruce Cole, chairman of the National Endowment for the Humanities from 2001 to 2009, is joining EPPC as a Senior Fellow in order to continue his expert work on the teaching of American history and civics and on private and federal cultural policy.
The Ethics and Public Policy Center is pleased to report that Mary Rice Hasson has joined EPPC as a Fellow in our Catholic Studies program. “Mary Hasson writes insightfully on a broad range of topics,” observed EPPC President Ed Whelan, “and her ongoing project on Catholic women and sexual morality promises to be of special interest. It’s great to have her on board.”
The Ethics and Public Policy Center is pleased to announce that Brian W. Walsh has joined EPPC to serve as executive director of EPPC’s new program on American Religious Freedom.
We are proud to report that the Ethics and Public Policy Center has earned its third consecutive 4-star rating from Charity Navigator, America’s largest charity evaluator, for sound fiscal management. According to Charity Navigator’s letter to EPPC, “Only 14% of the charities we rate have received at least 3 consecutive 4-star evaluations, indicating that the Ethics and Public Policy Center consistently executes its mission in a fiscally responsible way, and outperforms most other charities in America.”
On October 10, EPPC Distinguished Senior Fellow George Weigel was awarded the TOTUS Prize by the Work of the New Millennium Foundation, which is sponsored by the Catholic bishops of Poland. The prize, which was presented at a ceremony in Warsaw’s Royal Castle and televised nationally, was given in honor of Mr. Weigel’s work in “promoting the thought of Pope John Paul II.”
On November 14, 2007, Abad Oliba University in Barcelona, Spain, gave a Honoris Causa Doctorate to EPPC Distinguished Senior Fellow George Weigel.
On the unanimous recommendation of EPPC’s board of directors, EPPC is pleased to name George Weigel its first Distinguished Senior Fellow. “George’s new title is in recognition of his remarkable contributions to EPPC over the past two decades,” said William R. Burleigh, chairman of EPPC’s board.
The Ethics and Public Policy Center takes great pleasure in announcing that Peter Wehner, who is completing his White House service as Deputy Assistant to the President and as Director of the Office of Strategic Initiatives, will join EPPC next month as a Senior Fellow.
The United States Commission on International Religious Freedom, an independent, bipartisan federal agency advising the Administration and Congress, has elected Michael Cromartie as chair to succeed Felice D. Gaer, who has served in this capacity since 2006. Preeta D. Bansal and Richard D. Land were elected Vice Chairs. The officers will serve for one year effective July 1.
After a brief education about what Roe v. Wade really means, public support for overturning Roe and restoring abortion policy to the democratic processes dramatically increases. That’s what a recent poll jointly commissioned by the Ethics and Public Policy Center and the Judicial Confirmation Network shows.
EPPC Fellow Carter Snead was appointed to serve as U.S. Permanent Observer for the Council of Europe’s Bioethics Steering Committee (CDBI).
On May 15, 2007, President George W. Bush reappointed EPPC Vice President Michael Cromartie to serve another two-year term on the United States Commission on International Religious Freedom. Cromartie, currently Vice Chair of the Commission, served as Chair of the Commission in 2006.
