AUDIO: Roger Severino Discusses DOJ Dropping Suit in Abortion/Conscience Rights Case

August 6, 2021 | KTTH - Jason Rantz Show

On August 6, 2021, EPPC Senior Fellow Roger Severino joined the Jason Rantz Show to discuss the Department of Justice dropping its recent case against a Vermont hospital that forced a nurse to participate in an abortion over her religious objections.

Severino, who heads EPPC’s HHS Accountability Project, was director of HHS’s Office for Civil Rights when the nurse filed her complaint, and he ordered an investigation by the office’s Conscience and Religious Freedom Division. The Division’s career professionals, with assistance from career attorneys at the Office of General Counsel, issued findings of violation against the hospital which led directly to a lawsuit by the DOJ to enforce compliance with the law.

In a piece for National Review Online, Severino wrote: “The facts were stunning in their clarity, the victim was extremely credible and sympathetic, and the violator remained entirely callous and unrepentant. The UVMMC matter was the most open and shut conscience case in over a decade.”
