(Washington) — For the first time in history, the book John Henry Newman: A Life Sacrificed by Ida Friederike Görres is now available in English thanks to the work of Ethics and Public Policy Center Fellow Jennifer Bryson and Ignatius Press.
This book was nearly completely lost to history. When Görres died in 1971, the existence of an unpublished manuscript by her on Newman was unknown. It surfaced in Munich only in the 1990s and the book was first published in German in 2004. It has now been translated into English by Jennifer Bryson.
With the approach of the feast day of St. John Henry Newman on October 9th, the book offers an extraordinary and previously unavailable insight into the life and work of the much-beloved saint. Ratzinger Prize winner Hanna-Barbara Gerl-Falkovitz provides an in-depth introduction.
I am excited to offer this book to readers now in English. In beautiful prose and penetrating insight, the once-famous Catholic author Ida Friederike Görres offers readers a unique perspective on the spiritual meaning and nature of sanctity in the life of St. John Henry Newman.

In addition to her study of the life of Newman, Görres shows how his insights into conscience offer a bulwark against those in the present day who would seek to unmoor conscience and treat is an instrument of individual autonomy and personal feelings. Görres writes, “the separation of moral reason from obedience to God is the real root of every degeneration of conscience because only both, inseparably united, form a healthy conscience.”
