Revisiting Pope Francis’ Presidential Rebuke

Father Raymond de Souza makes fine points in his piece “The Pope vs. JD Vance on Immigration” (Houses of Worship, Feb. 14). But the topic warrants additional consideration.

First, the Catholic Church has a preferential option for the poor, including immigrants, and especially the persecuted. But that doesn’t override a society’s right and obligation to protect its citizens, regulate its borders and defend the health and integrity of its public institutions.
