EPPC’s Roger Severino: Today’s Hearing Was Devastating for Xavier Becerra’s Nomination

February 24, 2021

EPPC Senior Fellow Roger Severino, who directs EPPC’s HHS Accountability Project, offered the following comments on today’s hearing for Xavier Becerra’s nomination for HHS Secretary. Mr. Severino served as Director of the Office for Civil Rights at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services from 2017 to 2021.

“Today’s hearing was devastating for Xavier Becerra’s nomination. It exposed him as well qualified to lead Planned Parenthood but unqualified to be America’s top public health official during a pandemic. He failed to explain his neverending obsession with illegally forcing nuns to buy contraceptive and abortion coverage and could not name a single abortion restriction he would ever support. America needs an expert in public health at HHS, certainly not a divisive abortion extremist,” said Mr. Severino.
