Amazon Lifts Ban on Ryan Anderson

February 5, 2025

In response to EPPC’s campaign, Jeff Bezos reinstates When Harry Became Sally after four years.

(Washington, DC): After a four-year ban, Amazon has returned EPPC President Ryan T. Anderson’s book When Harry Became Sally: Responding to the Transgender Moment to its cyber shelves. Over the last two weeks, EPPC has mounted a campaign to put the ban back in the public eye.

The book had been on sale for three years and had hit No.1 on two Amazon book lists, but Amazon suddenly banned it shortly after Joe Biden took office. Amazon justified its decision by claiming the book presents “LGBTQ+ identity as a mental illness.” But the Washington Post—another Bezos company—had long before been forced to drop these claims about the book.

“I’m happy to give credit where credit is due” says Ryan T. Anderson. “Jeff Bezos and Amazon have done the right thing. I’m also grateful to my friends and allies who pushed for this to happen.”

In response, Andrew Ferguson, incoming chairman of the FTC, wrote on X, “Glad to see it, but it shouldn’t take an election for this to happen. I still want to know why this book got banned, and understand the market conditions that make it possible for a retailer to refuse to sell a popular book for four years.”
