On March 13, 2018, EPPC Hertog Fellow Yuval Levin took part in a panel discussion hosted by the American Enterprise Institute to discuss “The Numbers Behind the Opioid Epidemic,” a report from the Joint Economic Committee’s Social Capital Project. U.S. Sen. Mike Lee (R-UT) offered keynote remarks, followed by the panel discussion that included Mr. Levin.

Sen. Lee offered an overview of the crisis, highlighting both the intensity and the scope of its impact. He further discussed potential solutions to the opioid epidemic, such as the importance of community engagement and productive means of recovery.
Next, Scott Winship of the Joint Economic Committee interviewed Yuval Levin of National Affairs and AEI’s Sally Satel to hear their opinion on the project and crisis. Dr. Levin discussed the broader aspects of the crisis, noting that a corollary of America’s prosperity is an ability to fuel and fund a drug epidemic. Dr. Satel offered the history of how the epidemic unfolded and offered her thoughts as a public policy researcher and clinician for possible solutions.
