Turning Up the Heat on Medicare

September 15, 2010 | American Enterprise Institute

On September 15, 2010 EPPC Fellow James C. Capretta participated in a public forum sponsored by the American Enterprise Institute entitled, “Turning Up the Heat on Medicare,” which featured a presentation by Mr. Capretta. (The event’s announcement and details are available here.) Mr. Capretta’s remarks focused on the failure of the recently enacted health care law to properly reform the Medicare program. Medicare is under severe financial strain, and the new law simply papers over the problem with price controls that won’t work. Mr. Capretta argued for reforms that would move Medicare in a different direction, with an emphasis on consumer choice and strong price competition among competing plan and delivery systems. Mr. Capretta’s presentation was followed by comments from Marilyn Moon of the American Institutes for Research and Scott Gottlieb, M.D., a Resident Fellow at AEI. Joseph A. Antos, Ph.D., of AEI, moderated the session. The entire event can be viewed here. Mr. Capretta’s presentation can be viewed here.
