Andrew G. Bostom, author of The Legacy of Islamic Anti-Semitism, has called our attention to the recent murder of Iraqi Archbishop Paulos Farraj Rahho and the ongoing persecution of the Iraqi Christian population. Bostom refers to a somber piece in The New York Times detailing the kidnapping and murder of Archbishop Rahho, the leader of the Chaldean Catholics in the ancient city of Mosul. Archbishop Rahho was kidnapped by Al Qaeda gunmen on February 29 after publicly denouncing the protection money he had been forced to pay on behalf of the Christian community to shield its members from insurgent threats.   [Read More]

U .N. nuclear watchdog head Mohamed ElBaradei told Al-Arabiya television that Iran could have a nuclear weapon within six months. "If Iran wants to turn to the production of nuclear weapons, it must leave the NPT, expel the IAEA inspectors, and then it would need at least, considering the number of centrifuges and the quantity of uranium Iran has...It would need at least six months to one year," ElBaradei said. When asked "If Iran decides today to expel the IAEA from the country, it will need six months to produce [nuclear] weapons?" He answered, "It would need this period to produce a weapon, and to obtain highly-enriched uranium in sufficient quantities for a single nuclear weapon."  [Read More]

The Washington Post published a rather revealing article on the concerns many European diplomats have about a potential Obama administration's willingness to negotiate directly with Iran about its nuclear program. Obama has pledged to begin direct talks with Iran about suspending uranium enrichment; an activity the U.N. Security Council has said is a prerequisite for any discussions.   [Read More]

The Treasury Department froze the U.S. assets yesterday of two suspected Hezbollah "facilitators and fundraisers"in Venezuela and accused the Chavez government of protecting the two men. One of the two is a diplomat who has been stationed in Venezeula's embassies in Syria and Lebanon. The move prohibits Americans from doing business with the men and freezes any assets they may have under U.S. jurisdiction.  [Read More]

Michael Ledeen, a well-known scholar of fascism and authority on Iran, had a must-read piece in the Wall Street Journal over the weekend, in which he asked, why, given the lessons of the 20th century, do we not confront the "regimes - from Hezbollah and al Qaeda to the Iranian Khomeinists and the Saudi Wahhabis - who swear to destroy us and others like us."  [Read More]

Posted: Thursday, June 5, 2008
Iran's Mehr news agency is reporting that Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad predicted this week the "satanic powers" - Israel and the U.S. - would be destroyed. He is quoted as saying, "I must announce that the Zionist regime (Israel), with a 60-year record of genocide, plunder, invasion and betrayal is about to die and will soon be erased from the geographical scene." He continued, "Today, the time for the fall of the satanic power of the United States has come and the countdown to the annihilation of the emperor of power and wealth has started...I tell you that with the unity and awareness of all the Islamic countries all the satanic powers will soon be destroyed."  [Read More]
Al Qaeda: Dead or Alive?
The Gathering Storm, June 3, 2008
By Rick Santorum
Posted: Tuesday, June 3, 2008
My friend and EPPC colleague Pete Wehner has an excellent post on Commentary' s Contentions blog on the very promising transformation of sentiment in the Muslim world towards Osama bin Laden and Al Qaeda. Pete cites two cover stories in The New Republic by the same author and just seven months apart that signify radically changing conditions in the health of Al Qaeda. Wehner points out that the first story, written by Pete Bergen in October, 2007, was titled "War of Error: How Osama bin Laden Beat George W. Bush" but this month the tune had changed. In this week's article "The Unraveling: The jihadist revolt against bin Laden ," Bergen and co-author Paul Cruickshank write, "The repudiation of Al Qaeda's leaders by its former religious, military, and political guides will help hasten the implosion of the jihadist terrorist movement."  [Read More]
