Defiant Iran

Iran remains defiant in its development of its nuclear capacities. This week, the country's deputy foreign minister said that 4,000 centrifuges are in operation with 3,000 more currently being installed at the Natanz uranium enrichment facility. Ali-Reza Sheikh Attar told Iranian television, "Had the Westerners become certain that the resolutions would bring us to our knees, they would have definitely intensified them." And in other news, the Russian company constructing Iran's nuclear plant has renewed its commitment to completing the project despite the U.N.'s opposition to the effort.

South American Leftists Expand Anti-American Sphere

Bolivia's leftist president, Evo Morales, spent the weekend visiting Iran and Libya to strengthen diplomatic and economic ties there. Arriving in Libya on Saturday, he told the country's news service, "We are delighted about such visits to meet the revolutionaries and distinguished leaders in the world...We aspire to enhance the support and to upgrade the relations between our peoples in Latin America and the Jamahiriya," he said, referring toLibya. And in Iran yesterday, Morales continued his efforts (and rhetoric) to expand ties with the country that has agreed to invest over $1 billion in Bolivia's energy industry.

Hezbollah's Growing Presence in Latin America

Hezbollah continues ambitiously to spread its influence beyond the Middle East. It has successfully penetrated pockets of Africa and South America. For example, in Venezuela and other South American countries it has been working to convert pockets of the indigenous pto Shiite Islam. A Venezuelan convert, Teodoro Rafael Darnott, also known as "Commander Teodoro," has said, "If the United States were to attack Iran, the only country ruled by God, we would counterattack in Latin America and even inside the United States itself. We have the means and we know how to go about it. We will sabotage the transportation of oil from Latin America to the U.S. You have been warned."

In a disappointing and abrupt reversal of policy, the Bush Administration dispatched Undersecretary of State William Burns to join envoys from France, Britain, Germany, Russia, and China, to meet with Saeed Jalili, Iran's nuclear negotiator in Geneva.
