Since its founding in 1976 the Ethics and Public Policy Center has involved itself in analysis of world affairs. The Foreign Policy program addresses issues of America's political, economic, and human-rights responsibilities in the world, and seeks to clarify how America's religious traditions should affect its foreign policy.
Two conferences took place in 2000. The first was “Coping with China,” with Zbigniew Brzezinski, Wang Gungwu (National University of Singapore), Roderick MacFarquhar (Harvard), Arthur Waldron (University of Pennsylvania), and Yu Ying-Shih (Princeton). Areas of discussion included China's struggle with modernity, human rights, and U.S. policy toward China. (Co-sponsored with the Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation.)
The second was “Citizens and Soldiers: Citizenship, Military Service, and American Culture,” with Eliot Cohen (Nitze School, Johns Hopkins), Peter Karsten (University of Pittsburgh), James Burk (Texas A & M), Harvey Mansfield (Harvard), author and critic Midge Decter, and others. Topics included the American tradition of the citizen-soldier, Vietnam and the rise of the all-volunteer force, and the role of gender. (Co-sponsored with the Center for International Relations, Boston University.)
Smaller seminars on China have dealt with the state of Christianity and (with labor organizer and former political prisoner Han Dongfang) the social crisis facing China and its workers.
Publications. Two earlier conferences resulted in the forthcoming book The Influence of Faith, a multi-author look at the role of religion in U.S. foreign policy, edited by Elliott Abrams. (Co-published with Rowman & Littlefield, late spring 2001.) Other foreign-policy books include Close Calls: Intervention, Terrorism, Missile Defense, and 'Just War' Today and Honor Among Nations: Intangible Interests and Foreign Policy, both published in 1998 and edited by Elliott Abrams.
